Prefixes and suffixes

In English we can add parts to words. We usually add parts to the beginning or end of words. 

Parts which are added to the beginnings of words are called prefixes.

Parts which are added to the ends of words are called suffixes.

Some common suffixes that are used to make nouns.

-ment

-tion/ -sion

-ation/ -ition

Some suffixes that are used to change verbs to adjectives.

-ive/ -ative/ -itive 

words ending in -less, which means without.

Some common prefixes

Prefix	Meaning
Anti-	against
Auto-	by self
Bi-	two or twice
Ex-	former
Micro-	small
Mis-	badly or wrongly
Mullti-	many
Over-	too much
under-	not enough

Another useful prefix is re-, which usually means to do again.

Sometimes we can add it to the front of a word without a hyphen. Sometimes we need to put a hyphen in so that people don't get confused about pronunciation or meaning.

As a general rule we put in a hyphen when we add re- to a word beginning with e:

ex. re-educate, re-elect, re-enter, re-examine and so on.

Sometimes when we add parts to words, the spelling changes. For examples, when adding a suffixes to words ending in a consonant and y, the y usually changes to i before you add the suffix:

ex. dry becomes dries and dried

BUT note that when adding -ing to a verb ending in y, there is no change:

ex. dry becomes drying

Singular means only one. These words change spelling when we add suffixes to them to make them plural, which means more than one.
