Idioms are groups of words which people always use together. They have become standard phrases which people tent to use in less formal situations.
There are a number of things to remember about idioms.
- Their meanings are not always very clear.
- The individual words do not always help you to understand what the whole idiom means.
- You should treat idioms like single words because the meaning comes from the whole group.
- You will often be able to guess the meaning of idioms from how and when people use them.
- We usually use idioms in informal language, so be careful when and where you use them.
